Lagoon, Cairns, QLD

For most people, Cairns forms the starting or ending point of any trip down the East Coast. Although it initially developed into a hub for tourism due to its proximity to the Great Barrier Reef, backpackers now hit town just as much for the infamous party spirit as they do for a reef trip. If you’re looking to spend your days on the beach (or more accurately at the lagoon) and your nights partying hard, Cairns is the place to go for sure.

However, there is much more to Cairns than just the bars, and there is even plenty to entertain families choosing to holiday in Cairns. Aside from the obligatory sailing or diving trip out to the reef, some of the best Cairns attractions include Reef Teach, Cairns Tropical Zoo and the Aboriginal showcase on offer at Tjapukai. Another great daytrip from Cairns can be had by taking the Skyrail or Kuranda Railway up to the village of Kuranda, nestled in the middle of the rainforest.
